Staying disciplined as a Christian sounds simple in theoryโbut in practice, itโs one of the hardest things to maintain. You start with good intentions, but consistency fades, motivation drops, and routines break.
Iโve experienced this myself, especially when trying to balance prayer, fasting, work, and daily responsibilities. What Iโve learned is this: discipline isnโt built through intensityโitโs built through repetition.
Start Small (Daily Prayer Habit)
One of the biggest mistakes I made was trying to do too much too quickly. I would plan long, structured prayer sessions, but I couldnโt sustain them.
What actually helped was starting small.
Instead of aiming for long periods, I focused on simple, repeatable practices:
- The Rosary (1 decade of the Rosary = 1 x Our Father, 10x Hail Marys and 1 x Glory Be) gave me structure and helped me stay focused. I would start with 1-2 decades of the Rosary
- The Jesus Prayer allowed me to pray throughout the day, even briefly
- Sometimes, I would just sit in silence for one minute to reset my thoughts
These small steps were far more sustainable than trying to force long, intense sessions.
The types of prayers I use:

Remove Distractions
I realised quickly that discipline isnโt just about what you addโitโs also about what you remove.
My biggest distractions werenโt just external, like my phone, but internalโoverthinking, frustration, and mental fatigue.
To deal with this, I made simple changes:
- Putting my phone away during prayer
- Choosing a quiet space
- Keeping my prayers simple instead of overcomplicating them
Discipline becomes much easier when you reduce the things that constantly pull your attention away.
Stay Consistent, Not Perfect
There were many days when I didnโt feel spiritually strong. Sometimes I felt mentally drained, especially during fasting or after long days of work.
But I started to understand something important: discipline is not about how you feelโitโs about whether you show up.
On different days, I used different approaches:
- Sometimes the Trisagion
- Sometimes a short prayer
- Sometimes just silence
What mattered wasnโt the intensityโit was the consistency.
Even when it felt like nothing was happening, showing up daily built a habit over time.
Why This Matters
Christian discipline isnโt about becoming perfect overnight. Itโs about slowly forming habits that shape your life.
Small, consistent actions:
- Strengthen your focus
- Build spiritual awareness
- Help you stay grounded even when life feels difficult
Conclusion
If youโre struggling with discipline, donโt aim for perfectionโaim for consistency.
Start small. Remove distractions. Keep showing up.
Because in the end, discipline doesnโt grow through intensityโit grows through repetition.
